I might have fallen victim to a torrential downpour, and it might have taken several days for my sneakers to dry out completely, but regardless, Governors Ball this year was a great weekend. It was a little while ago: the first weekend in June, and the final day was canceled because of the threat of severe thunderstorms. It was my first year at the festival and I finally decided to take the plunge and buy a weekend pass. Lots of friends and coworkers have gone for the past several years, but I never went. Unfortunately, I missed out on being able to see Kanye live, but I saw some other great acts over the course of Friday and Saturday:
Bob Moses, Big Grams, De La Soul, Beck, The Strokes, HAIM, Misterwives, a bit of Mac Miller, a bit of Purity Ring, a hot minute of Against Me! (I wanted to catch a glimpse of Laura Jane Grace).
I went with my friends Emily and Ali. The above photo is when we saw Beck, who I never really listened to except for singles here and there, but he was fantastic. He played Raspberry Beret (RIP Prince), which was delightful to say the least.
Fun fact: Emily and I saw a proposal shortly after this photo was taken. This was during HAIM (my badass girl band queens), when the skies opened up and rained on us all. I found myself in the middle of a beautiful chaos: people fleeing for the exit, people desperately trying to cover their belongings, people embracing it all and dancing in the rain. Emily and I stood there trying to figure out how to handle the situation, but eventually said fuck it. And we danced in the rain to our favorite band.
Before: Happy Emily eating tacos from Tacombi. After: Soggy Emilys who just want a shower and some dry clothes.
Well worth it. Even though a lot of the sets I wanted to see were canceled, I still think I got my money's worth. I saw Haim! And they killed! In the rain! Founders Entertainment is launching another festival called The Meadows on October at Citi Field, and I've already bought my weekend pass because of a number of reasons:
- Sweet, sweet Gov Ball refund money from the canceled Sunday.
- Kanye redemption.
- I'll already be living in Queens, so the commute will be a cinch.
- It's only Saturday and Sunday so I don't have to take a day off of work.
- Grimes, Damian Marley, Sylvan Esso, Kygo, BØRNS, Chance the Rapper, Empire of the Sun, Temper Trap, The Weeknd.
Alas, the beauty of festivals: see 339486934793 acts for the price of 2. See acts you'd never normally buy a ticket to see if they were headlining their own show.
...I'm so excited.
